Per this news release, Delta has submitted plans to the FAA to allow passengers to use electronic devices during during taxi, takeoff and landing on domestic flights as early as tomorrow November 1, 2013.

This is pending FAA approval, however Delta is the first major airline to submit a plan to the FAA to allow this. This is following the FAA’s decision today to allow expand the use of electronic devices on the ground.

Details include:

Delta Air Lines is ready to allow its customers to be the first to use their portable electronic devices below 10,000 feet as early as Nov. 1, 2013 pending Federal Aviation Administration approval. All Delta aircraft have completed carrier-defined PED tolerance testing to ensure the safe operation of passenger portable electronic devices during all phases of flight and Delta’s plan has been submitted to the FAA for approval.

In support of the FAA’s call for expanded PED usage in flight, more than 570 mainline domestic aircraft stand ready to allow customer use of e-readers, tablets, and smartphones, all in airplane mode, during taxi, takeoff and landing on domestic flights. Delta Connection’s more than 550 regional aircraft will be ready by the end of the year. In-flight Wi-Fi will continue to be available for customers above 10,000 feet.

Bottom Line:

I can’t wait for airlines to start allowing electronic device below 10,000 feet. It would be great if the FAA approves this by tomorrow and passengers can start using their e-readers, tablets, and smartphones during taxi takeoff and landing.

While Delta is the first to submit their plans, I’m sure all the major airlines will follow suit very quickly.

  1. This is a long time coming. It will be really nice for those flights that around 2 hours. I always hated the fact that I had to shut my iPad down with 8 minutes left in the movie. It’s just not the same watching the rest 3 hours later.

  2. Delta loses the battle to be first, jetBlue’s submission has been approved and the PED ban will be lifted in a few hours. Valiant effort though, and this is a long time coming.
