Italy supporters booed Sweden's national anthem

Andrew Joseph

Italy entered Monday's World Cup qualifying match against Sweden in dire danger of missing the summer's tournament after a 1-0 loss in the first leg. The fans in Milan appeared to take that frustration too far.

As the teams lined up for the national anthem, the crowd at San Siro whistled and booed loudly for the duration of Sweden's anthem.

The lack of sportsmanship from the Italy supporters caught legendary Italian goalkeeper Gigi Buffon by surprise, and he responded by clapping in support of his Swedish opponents.

Soccer fans watching the match were furious with the Italy fans' behavior.

Italy has not missed a World Cup since 1958.
