East Naples man arrested in fatal hit-and-run crash that killed teen

An East Naples driver was arrested Saturday after deputies said he hit and killed a 13-year-old boy, who was riding his bicycle, and failed to stay at the scene of the crash.

Pedro Silva-Diaz, 32, initially faced a felony charge of hit-and-run — failure to stop and remain at a crash involving serious bodily injuries — but detectives, during his first court appearance Monday, requested that charge to be amended to leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, Collier County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kristi Lester said in an email.

Silva-Diaz also faces a misdemeanor charge of driving with an expired driver's license for more than six months, according to an arrest report.

He was booked at the Naples Jail Center on $100,500 bail. But bond would be moot because Silva-Diaz also has a hold for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on his arrest report.

Investigators said Silva-Diaz was driving a 2015 Toyota Tundra pickup north on Lakewood Boulevard, approaching a stop sign at Estey Avenue in East Naples shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday.

At the same time, Shayden Colvin, of East Naples, was riding east on Estey Avenue on his bicycle, according to a crash report.

Silva-Diaz turned left to head west onto Estey Avenue and struck Colvin, but continued driving and was stopped by deputies at Green and Sunshine boulevards about 10 minutes later after a witness to the crash called 911, investigators said.

The license plate on the 2015 Toyota Tundra matched the one the witness had relayed to dispatchers, deputies said.

Silva-Diaz told deputies he was on his way home from work and stopped at the stop sign when he made a left turn onto Estey Avenue and "felt a big thump on the front left side of his vehicle for a second," according to the arrest report. 

He told deputies he thought "it was a nail in his tire" and continued driving, the report states.

When deputies examined the Toyota Tundra they found a "red scrape of paint on the front left side bumper which was consistent with the accident," according to the report.

Colvin was on a red bicycle, riding home, the report states. He was flown to Tampa General Hospital, where he later died.

A GoFundMe page, created Saturday to support Colvin's mother and help offset costs for a memorial service, raised more than $11,000 in a day, more than doubling its goal.
