Where Will the Next American Express Centurion Lounge Be?

Now that American Express has opened a new lounge in Dallas that puts the offerings of US domestic airlines to shame, and opened up complimentary access to Platinum cardholders, there’s real anticipation of what the next lounge to join Dallas and Las Vegas will be.

ShrewdTravel says that it’s going to be San Francisco.

According to the construction managers working on the Boarding Area as well as numerous United and SFO employees, there is also work being done on a new American Express Centurion Lounge at SFO. This new lounge will not be on the new boarding pier (the lounge being built there is a United Club), but the new Centurion Lounge is currently under construction.

Here’s what I was able to learn about the upcoming American Express Centurion Lounge at SFO.

  • The lounge is currently under construction
  • The estimated time of completion is early summer 2014.
  • The architect is Gensler, the same company that designed the new LAX TBIT Star Alliance Lounge

  1. Gary, sorry didn’t respond to your follow up on Centurion lounge from your DFW write up. I’m requesting if you can check with your Amex contacts and see if they’re allowing Platinum card holders access to their lounge in MEX. It’s right next to AA’s gate(s), whereas the Admirals Club is 15-20 minutes away.

  2. Hi Gary,
Thanks so much for this info- how exciting for those of us based in SFO. Quick question: Do you know WHERE the new lounge is being scheduled to be built at SFO? (I.e. Which terminal?) As one of those people locked into UA at SFO- I’m wondering if I’ll be able to access when flying United as Terminal 2 (VX, AA) are not connected to Terminal 3 (UA).

  3. Great news. The Centurion lounge in Vegas is very nice – haven’t been to Dallas, (and hope I never do). SF really needs a quality lounge as well – but if open to all Plats, the lounge may be overrun.

  4. I haven’t been to either of the Centurion lounges, but I was just in the Star Alliance lounge in LAX last week and that is certainly nothing to write home about. As a matter of fact, my wife and I went in there for about 20 min, had a snack and then left to go hang out in one of the seating areas in the terminal.

So, the fact that the same architect is doing the new Centurion isn’t something that I’d be advertising as a plus if I were them. That’s just my opinion of course.

  5. The real question is if it’s going to be before security or after. Anybody have insight into that?

  6. I have a connection at the designing firm. I heard the lounge is planned for landside in terminal 3. The rendering I saw showed a mezzanine lounge with a small footprint on the ground floor (just stairs and a nondescript entry area) and check in and facilities upstairs in the mezzanine. Summer 2014 is a good estimate for opening.

  7. According to the Amex exec in charge of the lounges (who would kill me if I posted his name here), it’s MIA, JFK or EWR, and IAD after SFO. Amex would love to find space at ORD and LAX but has been frozen out due to a lack of space.

  8. Yeah, you can definitely get into the MEX one with a US-issued card, even though it’s not listed anywhere. I was there in late October.

  9. I was just at the lounge in LAS and a guy who works there said the SFO lounge will be in the UAL terminal. Guess there’s no reason to keep paying $450 for my United Club Card anymore, time to switch over the Amex.

  10. In IAD this week, terminal B has the old American airlines club almost completely remodled. Artwork is up, furniture going in… I am so hoping it is a centurian lounge
