FTW: Bruce Arians' reason for passing on Colin Kaepernick is nonsense

The Arizona Cardinals are in a terrible spot at quarterback after starter Carson Palmer suffered a broken left arm in Sunday's loss to the Rams. And, as we've seen after numerous quarterback injuries this season, the coach was asked about the prospect of signing Colin Kaepernick.

Bruce Arians' response, though, was not based in reality.

Arians said via ESPN's Josh Weinfuss:

"We've never had more than two on our roster since I've been here. We liked Blaine Gabbert so much that we kept him this year. So, we're really where we always are. We may look for a practice squad arm."

Even looking past the ridiculousness of choosing Gabbert over Kaepernick, what Arians told the media was straight-up false.

Since Arians was hired by Arizona in 2013, the Cardinals have almost always carried three quarterbacks on roster.

The Cardinals' own official depth chart before the Palmer injury listed Gabbert as the third quarterback - though he would be announced as inactive before the Rams game.

And archived depth charts will show a similar trend. This was from Week 16 last season, showing Dysert listed as the third quarterback. There was a period of the 2016 season with Dysert as part of the practice squad, but that would go against Arians' "never had more than two" claim.

And in 2015, the Cardinals had Palmer, Drew Stanton and Matt Barkley as the three quarterbacks. Here's a look at the Week 6 depth chart from 2015:

This keeps going. In 2014, the Cardinals had Palmer, Stanton and Logan Thomas on roster. When Palmer went down with his ACL injury, the Cardinals added Ryan Lindley as an active roster player. He started in the NFC Wild Card loss to Carolina.

The Cardinals also went with Palmer, Stanton and Lindley in 2013.

So while Arians claimed that the Cardinals never carried more than two quarterbacks on roster, it was almost the complete opposite. The Cardinals nearly always had three quarterbacks on roster under Arians.
