Good weather helps Indiana harvest

A complete week of warm and dry weather helped Indiana farmers make progress with the harvest.  The USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service reporters say the soybean harvest jumped ahead of the five-year average, but corn harvesting is behind schedule.

In central and northern Indiana, more than 72% of the soybeans are harvested, but only 59% of the beans are in down south.

The corn for grain is 38% harvested in the north where field activity was mostly focused on soybeans.  Central Indiana has 43% of the corn in, and 67% of the corn is harvested in southern Indiana.

More than 65% of winter wheat is planted, and statistics are even higher in the north.  Most of it has emerged and is in good to excellent condition.

Farmers also told USDA staff there is a lot of grain drying and hauling going on, along with lime and manure applications and equipment maintenance.
