Weather favoring Michigan farmers

Favorable weather continues to keep Michigan farmers ahead of the typical harvest pace.

In its latest Crop Progress report, the USDA says harvest progress for most cash crops remains faster than normal.

The warm and dry conditions also allowed winter wheat planting to advance to 88 percent done, with nearly 70 percent of the crop emerged.

Corn for grain harvest is 34 percent done as of Sunday, soybeans are at 74 percent, and the lifting of sugar beets is closing in on 40 percent finished.

Michigan farmers also spent last week tilling ground, hauling manure, and applying fall herbicides.
