OCM and R-CALF file suit against OK beef checkoff referendum

Oklahoma members of the Organization for Competitive Markets and R-CALF USA have filed suit with the Oklahoma Supreme Court to prevent the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture from certifying the Oklahoma beef checkoff program referendum.

The application is in response to the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association attempt to create a new state beef checkoff program through a referendum, which began on October 2.  If approved, Oklahoma cattle producers would have to pay an additional one dollar for every head of cattle they sell.

The filed documents outline what the groups call constitutional and legal irregularities relating to both the petition signature gathering and the election process.  Opponents of the program say the irregularities create an unfair and unjust election.

In-person voting on the referendum is November 1, 2017 and requested ballots must be postmarked by October 27.
