Tennessee quarterback Quinten Dormady (12) throws a pass during Tennessee fall football practice at Anderson Training Facility in Knoxville on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017.

Quinten Dormady could have played Saturday at Alabama, Tennessee coach Butch Jones said Monday.

But the junior quarterback’s status is unsettled Saturday at Kentucky, Jones also said before the Vols held their first practice of the week.

“I will know a little bit more later in the week,” Jones said. “We do expect him to practice (Tuesday). There’s a lot of ongoing things he is looking at.”

Dormady reportedly was in Chicago last week having his throwing shoulder evaluated. He dressed for Tennessee’s 45-7 loss at No. 1 Alabama on Saturday and went through warmups, but did not play.

Jones insisted the Boerne, Texas, native was “ready to play” if needed against the Crimson Tide.

While Jones was firm on Dormady’s standing for last week’s game, he was noncommittal as the Vols (3-4, 0-4 SEC) travel to Kentucky (5-2, 2-2 SEC) on Saturday.

“He is still ongoing. Some discussions right now. We are making sure he is OK,” Jones said.

Dormady started the first five games of the season before being replaced by redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano in the past two games. He took a pair of snaps against South Carolina on Oct. 13 when Guarantano’s helmet popped off. He has completed 55.5 percent of his passes for 925 yards and six touchdowns to six interceptions.

Freshman Will McBride is the third-string quarterback, who took second-team warmups at times at Alabama. He has not played this season, but Jones stressed McBride has to be ready to play.

“As a quarterback, you are always one snap away or two snaps away,” Jones said. “Will has gained valuable repetitions throughout the course of the season. That won’t be different moving forward this week.”

Jones anticipates senior offensive lineman Jashon Robertson returning against the Wildcats after leaving last week’s game with an injury in the second half.

He also said senior safety Evan Berry “continues to progress” toward returning from an undisclosed injury.

“It’s really a day-by-day, week-by-week process with him,” Jones said. “He’s working very hard. He wants to get back out on the field. This will be another big week for him. We will know more on where he’s at by the middle of the week. He is making tremendous strides.”
