WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (Fox) The leader of the apes — Caesar, the genetically modified ape motion-capture-acted and voiced by Andy Serkis — goes after a ruthless colonel (Woody Harrelson) who's determined that the only way to save humanity is to wipe out all of the apes. (PG-13; violence, thematic elements, some disturbing images) 

ANNABELLE: CREATION (Warner) In the mid-1950s, a dollmaker and his wife, struggling to get over the death of their daughter, take in a nun and several girls from an orphanage that has been shut down — awakening something dark in one of the dollmaker’s creations in the process. Prequel to the prequel to the horror hit “The Conjuring.” (R; violence, terror)  

AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER (Paramount) In the follow-up to the 2006 Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," vice president turned activist Al Gore explores the progress made on climate change issues since — and what's at stake with changes proposed by President Donald Trump. (PG; thematic elements, some troubling images) 

THE EMOJI MOVIE (Sony) In Textopolis, an emoji with multiple expressions must find his place in a world where everyone else has just one. Animated movie (yes, inspired by smartphone icons) with voices by T.J. Miller, James Corden, Steven Wright, Jennifer Coolidge, Maya Rudolph, Sir Patrick Stewart. (PG; rude humor) 

PERSONAL SHOPPER (Criterion) Kristen Stewart plays a personal shopper to the stars in Paris who, while grieving the recent death of her twin brother, decides to make contact with him. Moody ghost story directed by Olivier Assayas (“Clouds of Sils Maria”), who won best director honors for the movie at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. (R; some language, sexuality, nudity, gory image)

THE GOOD CATHOLIC (Broad Green) A young priest struggles with his calling when a he finds himself attracted to a parishioner. With Zachary Spicer, Danny Glover, John C. McGinley, Wrenn Schmidt. (PG-13; language) 

BUSHWICK (Image) In a Brooklyn consumed by civil war (it's been invaded by a militia from Texas), a woman and a war veteran join forces to survive. Action-drama with Dave Bautista, Brittany Snow. (not rated; violence) 

PLANETARIUM (Sony) Two American sisters who purport to connect with ghosts become the toast of 1930s France and become a film phenomenon. Dark supernatural drama, in English and French with English subtitles, with Natalie Portman, Lily-Rose Depp. (not rated; mature content) 

WHERE'S THE MONEY (Lionsgate) To get at the money his imprisoned father and just-released uncle stashed under an old flophouse, a street-smart young man from South Central Los Angeles has to find a way to get into the place — which is now a frat house occupied by an all-white fraternity. Comedy with Andrew Bachelor, Mike Epps, Terry Crews, Kat Graham. (R; crude sexual content, pervasive language, some drug material)

THE HOUSE Comedy with Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler as parents who, when their college-bound daughter’s scholarship doesn’t come through, decide to open an underground casino in their suburban neighborhood. (R; pervasive language, drug use, some violence, brief nudity) 

WISH UPON A high school student discovers an old music box that grants wishes, with a particular side effect: While she’s getting what she wants, those closest to her get killed off. (PG-13; violent and disturbing images, thematic elements, language) 

MAUDIE Character-study drama about the life and art of Maud Lewis, who battled bleak times and crippling arthritis to become a celebrated folk artist in 1940s Nova Scotia. With Sally Hawkins as Lewis and Ethan Hawke as her reclusive husband.(PG-13; some thematic content, brief sexuality) 

OPEN WATER 3: CAGE DIVE Three friends, shooting an audition tape for a reality show, do some shark-cage diving and are left behind in this found-footage-style horror sequel. (R; language, some gore)

ARMED RESPONSE A team of military operatives is trapped in an isolated compound when they try to find out who or what killed the team that was there before. Action thriller with Wesley Snipes, Anne Heche, Gene Simmons; directed by John Stockwell. (R; violence, gore, language)

PILGRIMAGE In the Middle Ages, a young novice (Tom Holland) joins a group of Irish monks on a mission to take a holy relic to Rome, with a little help from a former crusader (Jon Bernthal). (not rated; violence)

DEEP When a curious octopus unwittingly triggers an underwater blast, he has to save the day with a little help from his friends. Animated adventure. (PG; some mild rude humor)
