Prep Salutes: This week's area achievements

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Gabe Ramirez, Milwaukee Reagan: The junior won the City Conference meet Oct. 14 to lead the Huskies to a second-place finish. Ramirez completed the 5,000-meter course at Humboldt Park in 17 minutes, 16 seconds. He was five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The victory was Ramirez’s first of the season. His other top finish was a fifth-place showing at the Shorewood Invitational Oct. 7.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Paige Fassbender, Slinger: The Owls junior took the North Shore Conference title at Tendick Park on Oct. 14 by completing the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 42.91 seconds. The time was over 5 seconds ahead of the No. 2 finisher. Last year she took sixth at the Wisconsin Little Ten meet. The victory was Fassbender’s second of the season. She won the Owls Invitational Sept. 28 in 19:19.2.

FOOTBALL

Darios Crawley-Reid, Greendale Martin Luther: The Spartans junior helped his team turn the tables against University School on Friday. After losing, 14-7, to the Wildcats in the second week of the season, Martin Luther scored a 42-7 victory in the first round of the playoffs. Crawley-Reid, who is 5 foot 8 and 185 pounds, finished with a career-high 339 yards and five touchdowns in 22 carries. His touchdown runs of 43 and 40 yards in the first half set the tone for the evening.

GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING

Kaitlyn Michalek, Waukesha North/Kettle Moraine: The junior helped her team win the South Side Sprints at West Allis Central Oct. 14. Michalek won two events and placed in two others. She teamed with senior Krysta Michalek, freshman Kaitlyn Curtis and freshman Madeline Ahluwalia to set a meet record in the 100-yard free relay in 49.50 seconds. She also took the 50 free crown in 25.88. Her day also included a second-place effort in the 200 medley relay (1:56.80) and the third-place showing in the 25 free (13.73).

GIRLS TENNIS

Kaitlyn Kalinka and Megan Setter, Kenosha St. Joseph: The Lancers duo completed an undefeated season by winning the Division 2 state title Oct. 14 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. The tandem, which finished 33-0, defeated Madison Edgewood’s Grace Drake and Kinsey Kessel, 6-1, 6-1, in the final. Kalinka and Setter didn’t drop a set at state on the way to becoming the school’s first WIAA state doubles champion. They took second last year.

BOYS SOCCER

Jack Marks, Pewaukee: The senior midfielder helped the Pirates to complete an undefeated season in the Woodland Conference and reach the regional final. He entered play Saturday leading the team with 31 points (11 goals and nine assists). He finished with two goals and two assists in the team’s 10-0 victory over West Allis Central Thursday.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Kyle Kraninger, New Berlin United: The co-op of New Berlin Eisenhower and New Berlin West closed out its fifth straight Woodland Conference title with a 3-1 victory over Pius XI Wednesday on the road. The senior outside hitter finished with 23 kills and a .278 hitting percentage for the squad. He also had four aces and eight digs.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Kat Van Hulle, Pewaukee: The senior setter and right-side hitter helped the Pirates capture the Woodland Conference tournament title Oct. 14 with a 3-1 victory over Greendale. The title was the second straight for Pewaukee, which finished second in the Woodland West to Greendale. In the tournament final, however, Van Hulle had 22 assists and 12 kills in a 24-26, 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 victory.
