September milk production up 1.2% on year

Milk production during September 2017 in the top 23 U.S. states 16.175 billion pounds, up 1.2% from September 2016.

The USDA says production per cow was 1,851 pounds, the highest since the series of reports started in 2003, and the total number of milk cows, 8.737 million head, was up 73,000 head on the year.

California was the top U.S. producer with the highest number of dairy cows, followed by Wisconsin in both categories, and Colorado claimed the top per cow average, followed closely by Michigan.

Milk production in 2017 has topped 2016 for every month except February.

Brownfield states: Illinois: 149 million pounds, up 1.4% from 2016; average yield of 1,600 pounds per cow, up 40 on the year; herd of 93,000 head, down 1,000 from last year

Indiana: 340 million pounds, up 2.4% from 2016; average yield of 1,820 pounds per cow, up 15 on the year; herd of 187,000 head, up 3,000 from last year

Iowa: 420 million pounds, up 4.5% from 2016; average yield of 1,920 pounds per cow, up 40 on the year; herd of 219,000 head, up 5,000 from last year

Michigan: 910 million pounds, up 3.4% from 2016; average yield of 2,125 pounds per cow, up 40 on the year; herd of 428,000 head, up 6,000 from last year

Minnesota: 795 million pounds, up 3.2% from 2016; average yield of 1,740 pounds per cow, up 70 on the year; herd of 457,000 head, down 4,000 from last year

Ohio: 451 million pounds, up 2.0% from 2016; average yield of 1,710 pounds per cow, up 35 on the year; herd of 264,000 head, unchanged from last year

South Dakota: 216 million pounds, up 4.3% from 2016; average yield of 1,830 pounds per cow, up 30 on the year; herd of 118,000 head, up 3,000 from last year

Wisconsin: 2.458 billion pounds, up 0.8% from 2016; average yield of 1,925 pounds per cow, up 15 on the year; herd of 1.277 million head, unchanged from last year
