Prep swimming: Lely's Delcompare sisters advance to regionals with district wins

Coming into the season, Lely High School swimming coach Adam Peterson knew his girls squad was light on depth but heavy on talent capable of making noise at the state meet.

That played out during Thursday’s Class 2A-District 10 meet at the Norris Pool on the Community School of Naples campus, with the Trojans finishing a distant fifth in the team standings but shining on the individual level.

Sisters Grace Ann and Audrey Delcompare won individual events, clinching automatic berths into the regional meet next Saturday at FGCU. Both are returning state qualifiers, with Audrey placing in two events last year. The Trojans’ other returning state qualifier, Madison Bonfitto, is pretty much assured of going to the regional meet as well, with a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and a third-place in the 100 free. The wild card entrants are determined by times, pending the results of the other district meets this week.

Lely swim team confident about postseason chances

“I think the kids did well. A lot of kids dropped time and at this stage of the season. That’s what we want to see,” Peterson said. “They exceeded my expectations today. The Delcompares – Grace Ann and Audrey – are where they need to be. Both of them won an event today and I think they’ll go even faster next week at regionals.”

Audrey said the district meet was a good first step in the quest for another state appearance.

“I was pretty happy with what I did,” the talented junior said. “It was a good meet to start out with. I feel pretty good about (making the state meet again).”

While the sisters are very competitive, Grace Ann says there’s no sibling rivalry between the two.

“It’s never been a problem,” the senior said. “We’ve always pushed each other. It’s been awesome (swimming together), and I would never re-do it for anything.”

Peterson said this season has been a challenging one, with the Trojans losing a couple weeks of practice and competition time due to Hurricane Irma.

“We’re still behind a little bit,” he said. “Whenever you miss that amount of practice, it’s going to hurt you. But for missing that amount of time, they’ve done well. But they definitely haven’t gotten back to what they could have or should have been.”
