The Power of Music & The Purpose of Your Pain

Satan wants to trap us in our brokenness, but there is a purpose for the pain and song of freedom we can sing to the Lord. Here's the power of music. #Biblestudy #RestandRelease #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

C.S. Lewis said: “Pain shatters the illusion that all is well.”

The reality is we live in a broken world and we all experience pain.   Our enemy – wants to take us out.  The spiritual battle is raging all around us.

We need Christ.

We need his power.

We need his strength and we need his help.

Satan wants to trap us in our brokenness.  He wants us to believe that things will never change and to dwell on the past, with bitterness.  He does not want us to move forward into a new future that God has prepared for us. He does not want us to heal, to be set free or to sing a new song to the Lord.

But friends – a new day has come!

Our pain has a purpose and the greatest purpose is that we know Christ intimately through our suffering. (Philippians 3:10)

Do not lose hope.

Release your pain to the Lord.

It’s time for a fresh start.

It’s time for a new day.

It’s time for a new song.

Psalm 100

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Don’t just say a silent prayer of thanks to God for all he has done for you…

Shout it!

Shout for joy!

Worship with gladness – smile.

We are God’s people and his love endures forever.

Now THAT’S something to sing about –every.single.day!!!

Walk in freedom as you walk with the King,

Courtney

  1. You are correct that Satan tries to enter our lives in sneaky ways..the internet, through music, through movies. I pray for a hedge of protection around my family often.

  2. “Lord, I need you” by Matt Maher. I am a stay at home mom to a very spirited 17month old and found myself singing this the other day when it was just really hard. I like it because it’s so simple and so true whether I’m at the end of my rope like I was the other day or everything is going well; we always need Jesus! “every hour I need you, my one defense, my righteousness, oh God how I need you” “so teach my song to rise to you when temptation comes my way. When I cannot stand I’ll fall on you; Jesus you’re my hope and stay.”

    1. I’m a mother of two boys 6 and 3 and a 2 year old preschool teacher. I sing this song often as well! Thank you for posting this and reminding me ????

  3. I’ll Fly Away. I can belt this song out! Like a bird from prison bars has flown. No more cold iron shackles on my feet. When I die, Hallelujah! By and by I’ll fly away! Music is my favorite form of praise.

  4. I love many of the old hymns. Nothing but the Blood of Jesus is one that I sing in the shower. I play at various nursing homes. People with Alzheimers may forget most everything, but when they hear the old hymns, they remember the words. Precious memories is a good one. Amazing grace and
many others. Music soothes the savage soul> Praise God from whom all blessing flow

  5. “Praise His Name” by Jeff and Sheri Easter. This song spoke to me during a difficult time in my life. My Dad had suddenly died of a massive heart attack. My husband was deployed for 5 months and I had 2 little ones to take care of while I was teaching full time, still very active in my church, having to pay all the bills and take care of the house etc. God used that song to tell me that no matter what you’re going through, you need to praise His name. ” When everything falls apart-Praise His Name, when you have a broken heart, just raise your hands and say, “Lord you’re all I need, You’re everything to me and He’ll take the pain away. When you feel you’re all alone-Praise His name. When you feel you can’t go on you just raise your hands and say,”Greater is He that is within me and you can praise the hurt away. If you’ll just praise His name”.

    1. That is a great song Tammy!

I like In Christ Alone. It is so beautifully written but also has a sad memory for me because we played it at my moms funeral. She loved that song too. I love another song by a sibling group The Martins called The Promise. I feel as if Jesus is talking right to me and reminding me of all He promised. In my opinion the greatest gospel song ever written is by The Crabb Family. It’s called Through The Fire. The only way we survive hard times is through. All these songs can be found on YouTube if you ladies haven’t heard of them. I love music.

PS-if I could pick a secular song that helps me it would be Shania Twain’s song called Up. Because things can only go up from what our bad day/times bring. 🙂

  6. My favorite worship song is “Revelation Song” by Kari Jobe. I sing this song with all my heart and all my soul as I fall to my knees and praise the One Who is worthy.

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain. Holy, Holy is He. Sing a new song to Him who sits on
    Heaven’s mercy seat.

Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty Who was and is and is to come.
With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings You are my everything and I will adore You

Clothed in rainbows of living color, flashes of lightning rolls of thunder.
Blessing and honor strength and glory and power be to You the only wise King.

Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder at the mention of Your Name.
Jesus Your Name is Power, Breath and Living Water such a marvelous mystery.
Oh, You’re worthy, mystery, You are worthy.

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty Who was and is and is to come.
With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings
You are my everything and I will adore You, I will adore You.”

  7. Wow! I got so much from your blog! Lately, I feel like myself and my family have been under attack by Satan. There are so many things going on in my family. Now, I am facing a very serious diagnoses from my doctor. I truly feel that I am to the point of brokeness. However, I know that God can and will make things right. All of the nasty innuendos, lies, illness, betrayal. etc…. will be wiped away. He does and will take care of His sheep. Your analogy of an egg was spot-on. Thank you! I truly needed this.

  8. The more I seek You the more I find You …
Sit and rest at His feet in peace awesome love
Also … Hear us from heaven … no one higher ..
Worshipping You … whisper His name … let it rain … so many songs I could go on and on..
But these are a few of my favorites that when I listen to them I just melt and go straight into the Throne room into Gods Presence!! What could be better than that !!❤️❤️❤️

  9. I actually have 2 favorites right now! One is O praise the name of the Lord by Hillsong…..the other is Grace Upon Grace by Brooke and Boggs.

    I come with no defense
    Can’t prove my innocence
    My only hope remains
    Grace upon Grace

Can’t pay for what I’ve done
    My sin I can’t outrun
But Your mercy made a way
    With Grace upon Grace

    So, like an ocean wave
    Crashing over me
    Come and drown my shame
    In Your mercies deep
Oh rid my soul of every guilty stain
    With Grace upon Grace

    Oh what a selfless trade
    Your blood for my mistakes
    My treason in exchange
    For Grace upon Grace

    So, like an ocean wave
    Crashing over me
    Come and drown my shame
    In Your mercies deep
Oh rid my soul of every guilty stain
    With grace upon grace

    I surrender all
With hands held high I fall
    I surrender all
    Lord, my heart is Yours
Take it and make it pure
    Lord, my heart is Yours

    Wow…..<3

  10. This song “Lord I need you” by Matt Maher gets me going to release it all to my Lord. The lyrics I sing as they are my purest most inner feelings I feel that keep me humbled at his feet. ” Where sin runs deep you’re grace is more and where grace is found is where you are. Where you are Lord I am free Holiness is Christ in me. Lord I need you”

  11. it is well with my soul…is my fav song when you know the background of the author of this song. he went through so much grief and loss and still said it is well with his soul. amazing. thanks for reminder of the power of music..both it’s positive and negative effects and how we need to guard against Satan. isn’t it like him to turn everything bad..music ,sex, all the good beautiful things God created he tries to distort..as a single woman living in this impure immoral world there it’s important to guard our hearts. purity is the path less traveled and I never want to jeopardize my salvation from impure lifestyle. we must remember matthew says wide is the road that leads to destruction and MANY will enter thru it and narrow is the road that leads to life and only a FEW find it. also revelation 22 says nothing impure will ever enter the kingdom of heaven. thanks for the reminder!!

  12. It’s hard to choose a favorite when there are so many wonderful songs, but after reading Psalm 100, I couldn’t help but start singing “Shout to the Lord”by Rebecca St. James.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the King
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands
Forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You

  13. I really enjoy music and love our church music group and the Christian radio station in our area, so I feel blessed this way. Any music has always been a balm for my soul. So it is really hard to pick just one song, but right now, I really noticed the words of “Blessed be the Name” by Tree63 and it picks me up and humbles me at the same time, which is exactly what I need.

Now I just have to figure out how to create a playlist. I only use Pandora and can’t afford to buy all of the songs, so I am at the mercy of when they pop up on my ‘station’ that I created. But I’d love to have a playlist. Will put that on my list of things to google, because I think it’s important for me.

Thank you Courtney, for this wonderful study/retreat. I tried to get a friend to join me, who I thought could really benefit from the rest and release, but she didn’t. I think I am going to send the book to her anyway, with an encouraging letter because I know how much it has helped me. thank you! Karen

    1. Youtube has pretty much any Christian/worship song you can think of and it’s free! You can make a playlist there and access it whenever you need it.

  14. I bought Chris Rice’s album ‘The Hymn Project’. It is so calm and simple and speaks the songs of my youth to my heart now. ❤

  15. So many favorites! I think my all time fave song to belt out is “How he Loves’ by David Crowder Band. “Oh, how he loves us so”!????

  16. This study has helped me so much and been such a blessing in my life! I feel like I am walking through the exact things that you are talking about each day of the study. Thank you so much for sharing this with us!

  17. Right now it’s “Surrender” by Flame featuring V. Rose because it is a way for me to tell God that I do surrender to Him; that I want Him to be the boss of my life & anchor of my soul!

  18. Playing catch-up here, but everyone following this study NEEDS to listen to Christy Nockels’ new album “Be Held-Lullabies for the Beloved.” The entire album is a beautiful reminder of God’s love for us and His desire for us to rest in Him and lay it all down at His feet. I’m so encouraged by this study and that music at this time in my life. ❤️

  19. “Arms open wide” by Creed and “Everywhere I go” with Tim Timmons. It is beautiful to lose myself in praise. It is when I feel closest to Him.
