Minnesota youth compete in Beef Knowledge Bowl

Minnesota youth competed in livestock trivia Thursday during the annual Beef Expo at the State Fairgrounds.

The Knowledge Bowl is designed after the popular 4-H contest except that all questions during the Expo competition are related to the beef industry.

Branstyn Peterson of Gibbon says he loves learning about agriculture.

“There’s some questions that are really obvious like ‘what is another name for a cow’s nose?’  Then sometimes they try to trick you (with questions like) ‘how many quarters are there on beef cattle?’  Obviously four.  Sometimes though (we’ll get a question) like ‘when a calf has been weaned, how many years will it take for (the calf) to have grandchildren?’ and stuff like that, which can get really confusing.”

Peterson’s Sibley County teammate Jordan Mueller has been competing in Knowledge Bowls since he was in Kindergarten.

“It’s very competitive, and if you win it’s kind of like bragging rights.  You meet a lot of new people and learn a lot of new things.”

Knowledge Bowl teams can earn points towards the Premiere Exhibitor Award by finishing in the top two of the junior or senior category.

The Minnesota Beef Expo continues through Sunday.
