USDA reports record September red meat production

The USDA says domestic commercial red meat production in September was new monthly record at 4.404 billion pounds. That is the second consecutive month in a row with a new all-time high.

Pork production, at 2.164 billion pounds, was up 2% from September 2016, the previous all-time monthly high, with a 1% increase in the slaughter to 10.284 million head and 2 pound gain in the average live weight to 282 pounds.

Beef production was also up 2% on the year at 2.222 billion pounds, also topping the previous monthly record, with a 3% rise in the kill to 2.695 million head cancelling out an 11 pound loss in the average live weight, down to 1,359 pounds.

For the year to date, commercial red meat production is on a record pace 38.383 billion pounds, 4% ahead of this point in 2016.
