A 25-year-old woman told Milwaukee police she thought robbing fast-food restaurants at gunpoint was a "petty crime," according to a criminal complaint released Wednesday.

Laura Walton, 25, and her boyfriend, Deon Batton, 18, were charged with two counts of armed robbery in connection with holdups at Subway and Taco Bell on Oct. 9 on the city's north side.

The couple is believed to be responsible for a spree of five armed robberies over a three-day period. Milwaukee police announced their arrest last week after the two were captured inside a stolen car about 30 minutes after the last robbery was reported.

Walton used a pink handgun while Batton carried a black gun, the complaint says.

Both admitted to the robberies, saying Walton had the idea because she needed money and had previously worked at restaurants, according to the complaint.

They are due back in court next Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

The two were linked to the robberies through witness statements, surveillance video and fingerprints. The investigation was led by the Milwaukee Police Department's Robbery Task Force.

In addition to the robberies at Subway, 2244 N. King Drive, and Taco Bell, 4117 N. 76th St., court records show the couple is facing possible charges for similar armed robberies at Game Stop, 10400 West Silver Spring Drive; Subway, 5800 W. Capitol Drive; and Cousins Subs, 801 E. Capitol Drive.

Milwaukee police recovered two guns, including this one, when they arrested two robbery suspects on Wednesday.
