The Best Way to Get Stink Out of Workout Clothes

I like to sweat. I'm always cold, so I like to get warmed up and start sweating. Plus a workout doesn't really feel like a workout unless you break a good sweat don't you think? Problem is, I'm a smelly girl. I sweat and I stink. It's especially bad when it comes to my workout clothes. Unfortunately, I've passed my stink on to my kids. Sorry kids. I just found out that some of the fancy schmancy fitness brands have special stink-free clothes, but my budget doesn't always allow for that. And it especially doesn't allow for that when I buy my kid's clothes. I am a big fan of working with what you have, and what I have is smelly. So what is the best way to get the stink out of your workout clothes? I think I found the answer.

The Best Way to Get the Stink Out of Workout Clothes

We all want to break a sweat but we don't all want to smell like sweat and NO ONE wants that sweat smell to remain on clothes. So here are some tips you can use to get the stink out!

1. Wash Immediately

Don't let your sweaty clothes linger. I had a bad habit of throwing my workout clothes in my laundry basket where all our normal clothes were. My other clothes picked up the smell and made one soggy mess which was the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Get in the habit of doing laundry every day if you can. If you can't, let your clothes dry or air out before putting them in with your dirty clothes.

2. Wash Work-Out Clothes Inside Out

It makes sense that the clothes you are wearing are touching your body and picking up the sweat from the inside out. Turn them inside out to wash them so that the clothes have more contact with your cleaning agents.

3. Sanitize

Place your clothes into your washing machine and add a sports wash detergent like this into the fabric softener compartment or directly into your rinse cycle. Follow the directions on the package to get the best results.

4. Go Easy on the Detergent

Detergent alone doesn't kill all bacteria. You need to use the right product for the job so look for a product that will work with your detergent to eliminate bacteria that causes illness and creates those lingering bad smells.

5. Skip the Softener

Since fabric softener is designed to deliver moisture, it can leave a coating on your athletic clothing that will actually trap in the stink. Nobody wants that now do they?

6. Skip the Dryer

Workout clothes are made to dry quickly so why not use that to your advantage? High temperatures can damage your fabric so if you must, dry them on low.
In no time, your smelly workout clothes will be smelling fresh instead of sweaty and stale. Have you found any other tips that help for you? I'd love to hear them.
