Technology needed to feed the world

 

The President and CEO of Land O’ Lakes says more than technology is needed to feed the growing population.

Chris Policinski says consumer’s perception of the role of technology in food production must change.

“There’s an interesting thing in the U.S. and developed Europe that’s occurring, and that is there’s almost an anti-science mindset as it relates to food production,” he says. “We have to change that because it’s hurting everybody, but it’s hurting the most food insecure places the worst.”

Sean Callahan, president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, says technology will help provide more access to nutritious foods.

“It’s not that people don’t have access to food, it’s that they don’t have access to quality and good nutritional foods,” he says. “And so we can have a problem like we have in the United States with obesity or highly processed food, but we still aren’t helping those young children have the opportunity to grow and thrive.”

Policinski and Callahan both said the industry must find ways to grow more food with less resources to feed the more than 9 billion people expected by 2050.
