Boys Golf: Gulf Coast cruises to district title

Led by sophomore Joey Burke, the Gulf Coast boys golf team cruised to its third straight Class 3A-District 15 championship on Monday.

The Sharks finished with a team score of 303 at Kingsway Country Club in Lake Suzy, well ahead of host Charlotte (369). Fort Myers was third with 373, while Riverdale was fourth with 479.

Burke shot a 1-under-par 71 to win medalist honors by five strokes. He beat out teammates Matt Ariza and Remi Chartier, who each shot a 76.

All five Sharks golfers finished in the top nine individually. Ryan Hart carded an 80 to finish tied for fourth. Armand Procacci tied for sevenths with a score of 86.

Competing as an individual, South Fort Myers’ Wade Barnett shot a 126 to qualify for next week’s regional. The top three individuals from non-qualifying teams move on past district.

Billy Brumbaugh was Charlotte’s top golfer, shooting an 80 to finish tied for fourth. Josh Mesmer led Fort Myers, shooting an 86 to tie for seventh.

The Sharks move on to the regional tournament, Wednesday at Lakewood National Golf Club in Lakewood Ranch. Last year Gulf Coast advanced out of regional and finished ninth at state.
