Reciprocity in place for American Airlines and Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways is joining the oneworld alliance at the end of October and is shoring up the bilateral partnerships associated with that move. Today’s announcement is that Qatar and American Airlines are integrating their frequent flyer options with earning and redemption reciprocity now available.

Perhaps even more significant is that AAdvantage members will earn towards their elite qualifications for flights on Qatar, though the earnings page doesn’t quite reflect that yet.

And, if you’re an AAdvantage® member, now you can earn and redeem AAdvantage miles on all eligible Qatar Airways flights. In addition, travel on Qatar Airways flights will count toward elite status qualification.

That’s a big step forward for the two programs and a nice move for customers to get that bit set a few weeks early.

It is worth noting that other reciprocity, such as lounge access, is not yet available. That will not happen until the end of October when Qatar formally joins oneworld.
