'Boyz N the Hood,' rare silent films, Shocktoberfest among movie options

Paul's Alley Cinema 

"The Ghost and Mr. Chicken": After being rained out last weekend, the free outdoor movie series in an alley in Walker's Point returns (weather permitting) with this 1966 Don Knotts comedy. 170 S. 2nd St. 8 p.m. Friday. Free.

UWM Union Cinema 

Unless noted, admission is $5, free for UWM students and members of the Union Cinema, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd. 

"Boyz N the Hood": Still-stunning drama about life in South Central Los Angeles circa 1991 — the same year as the Rodney King beating. Showing in 35-millimeter, with Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut. 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday.  

"Dawson City: Frozen Time": Documentary about one of the world's most amazing cinema-history discoveries — a cache of 533 reels of silent film, buried in the permafrost in Alaskan gold rush country since the early 20th century and unearthed in 1978. 9 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. 

"Chicagoland Shorts, Vol. 3": Program of experimental films, works by queer filmmakers, women and people of color from Chicago. 7 p.m. Tuesday. Free. 

"The Age of Consequences": Documentary looking at climate change and its connection to military conflicts around the world. 7 p.m. Wednesday.

"I Am Not Your Negro": Raoul Peck’s first-rate documentary finishes what writer and activist James Baldwin started in 1973 with a book project about slain civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Medgar Evers. 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday. Free.

Shocktoberfest 

Weekend horror classics return to the Avalon Theater, 2473 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., and the Rosebud Cinema, 6823 W. North Ave., Wauwatosa, through October. Admission is $5. 

At the Avalon this weekend: "Suspiria," Italian horror master Dario Argento's 1977 classic about sinister doings at a ballet academy, showing in a 4K remastered print. 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 

At the Rosebud: "The Craft," 1996 movie in which four young women at a Catholic prep school form their own coven. 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

FOCUS Film Society 

"Gildersleeve's Bad Day": 1943 comedy spun off the popular radio show, with Harold Peary reprising his role as the great Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve. 7 p.m. Saturday 10/14. $3.

Movie Time / Charles Allis Art Museum 

"Happy Land": Kenosha native Don Ameche stars in this 1943 drama about a druggist in a small Midwestern town whose worldview darkens when he learns his son, serving in the Navy, has died in action. 1801 N. Prospect Ave.; free parking is now available in a marked lot across Royale Place (see the Allis for details). 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.  $7, $5 for students and seniors, free for museum members.
