Butch Jones: Vols AD John Currie has 'been extremely supportive'

Tennessee Director of Athletics John Currie smiles during a press conference announcing new information concerning the Tennessee Lady Vols name, logo and brand at the Ray & Lucy Hand Digital Studio on the UT campus in Knoxville, Tennessee on Thursday, September 14, 2017.

Butch Jones said during a radio appearance on Wednesday that athletic director John Currie has shown support for the Vols coach.

Tennessee (3-2, 0-2 SEC) is coming off its most lopsided loss in the history of Neyland Stadium -- the Vols lost 41-0 to Georgia on Sept. 30 -- and Jones is on the hot seat while in the midst of his fifth season at UT.

"He’s been extremely supportive, and he understands everything that we’ve built, everything that we’re going through with a young football team," Jones said of Currie during an appearance on 104.5 The Zone’s “3HL.”

Jones added that he and Currie are "in constant dialogue."

“John and I talk all the time," Jones told the Nashville radio station. "The great thing is, John has been here, and he understands the program. He understands where it’s come from."

Tennessee hired Currie to be its athletic director in February. He replaced Dave Hart.

Currie had previously served as the athletic director at Kansas State since 2009.

Before going to Kansas State, Currie was a UT athletic department administrator from 2000-09.

Jones has never been fired.

Currie has never fired a football coach.

Kansas State's hall of fame coach Bill Snyder presided over the program throughout Currie's tenure and still does.

Snyder’s Wildcats lost six straight games in 2015, marking KSU's longest losing streak since 1989. Included was a 55-0 thumping at the hands of Oklahoma. The Wildcats pulled out of the spiral with three straight wins and made a bowl, and Snyder then led Kansas State to a nine-win season last year.
