NEW ZEALAND GREEN MUSSELS

New Zealand Green Mussels make up 3% of the Boys new food by Ziwi Peak. #doodle*licious

We are presently in our third week eating an “alternative to raw” – species appropriate diet of beef – its liver, kidney, heart, tripe, bone and lung. In addition to – green lipped mussels!

Prior to spending all my spare time reading about foods that are good for them, I’d never heard of green mussels. Never knew about all the benefits, and had no idea the green lipped mussel was exclusive to New Zealand.

They get their name from the green edges or “lips” of the shell.

BENEFITS OF GREEN LIPPED MUSSELS FOR DOGS –

The best known components of green lipped mussels are Omega-3 fatty acids, including the fatty acids EPA and DHA. Omega-3s work by reducing the level of inflammation associated with diseases such as osteoarthritis. Although this is the same compound found in fish oil, in the case of green lipped mussels, this is combined with other compounds that also fight joint inflammation and pain. HOW ARE THE BOYS DOING? –

Very well.

I was out of town this past weekend, and got this text from Doodle Dad…

NEW ZEALAND GREEN MUSSELS

They’re both adjusting nicely and I see a slight decrease with what once was constant itching and scratching.

Harley still has his moments of allergy irritation but nothing like before.

Jaxson’s ears haven’t been bothering him AND they no longer have that pink flamingo color inside. #goodsign

Thanks to Ziwi Peak they’re also getting green tripe in their food as well – but that’s for another day 🙂

The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra ❤️

Interesting, never heard of green lipped muscles either. I’ve been reading so much about raw diets and looking forward to hearing more about how it’s going for your dogs.

Right now Debi, I am still watching and documenting myself. I was ready to go full raw, but based on my lifestyle right now (huge renovations) this alternative to raw was like a dream come true. Stay with us and I will keep updating every step I take. So far, so good. The Boys are eager Doodles at meal time – even finicky Harley is racing to his bowl.

We tried green-lipped mussels last winter with Ruby. She gets some stiffness in her legs during the cold, damp winter up here in IL. They really helped her and I think we will definitely give them to her again this winter.

That’s wonderful – what form were you giving them to her? I’ve also heard great things about the powder form.

Oh, those are pretty! So green! (Rita would never eat apple or strawberries! Wish she would, but she is not a fan of most fruits and veggies!) #sopicky

Jackie, Harley wasn’t a fan either but then I found out why – he doesn’t like cold fruit. #divodoodle He will gobble it up at room temperature #gofigure

The boys have had green-lipped mussels in their food before and loved it. They get tripe treats from Dr. Harvey’s too. I love that your husband’s message includes a poop report! LOL!

I know of the the benefits of Omega 3’s, chondroitin, and glucosamine, but I’ve never heard of these mussels. It sounds like your dogs are really getting benefits from them though.

Since I seem to like fish/seafood in general I would probably love those muscles. Madison, probably not, the little food snob. Glad the food is working out for you boys and you are feeling better.
