RUIDOSO – Perhaps a friend, communicator and therapist should be added to the titles of hairdresser, beautician, hairstylist, cosmetologist and salon manager to better describe the multiple duties of hair care professionals.

Providing kind words and patient listening can be extremely important to clientele of hair salons and those hair care professionals who possess these abilities are a significant asset to the profession.

Dana Williams, local beautician at the Bare Essentials Day Spa Beauty Salon, 201 Gavilan Canyon Road, knows the customer service and communication skills necessary to be successful with clients, very well, since she has been in the business for 36 years.

Williams genuinely enjoys communicating with people which led her to write her first book, “Conversations in the Beauty Shop.”

"There is humor in the book and a little bit of everything," Williams said. "I’ve always loved to journal and express my thoughts in writing. I have a diversity of clients. There are a lot of small-town folks with big hearts and big Idiosyncrasies.”

She said she wants to “inspire each and every person to live authentic lives—to not give up on their dreams but to believe in and live their dreams.”

Williams had a turnout of 150 people at her beer and book party book-signing to launch her first book at The Hidden Tap Tuesday, Oct. 3. Williams said she was very pleased with the number of people who came to her book signing.

Williams’ book, “Conversations in the Beauty Shop” is currently available on Amazon. It can also be purchased at her next book signing at the Ruidoso Public Library, 107 Kansas City Road, in Ruidoso from 11 a.m. until noon, Oct. 20.

Williams is already working on a second book which will be titled “More Conversations in the Beauty Shop” which will be released in about a year.

She said she is “grateful for all the support she has been receiving regarding her book and for living in such a great community."

The Bare Essentials Day Spa is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
