Packers notes: Kevin King hoping for shot at covering Cowboys' Dez Bryant

GREEN BAY – After first facing Julio Jones and then A.J. Green, Green Bay Packers cornerback Kevin King figures to get a third crack at an elite receiver Sunday.

When the Packers travel to play the Dallas Cowboys, receiver Dez Bryant will be waiting. King thanked his coaches when he was assigned to cover Green of the Cincinnati Bengals in his first career start.

What would he tell them if they assigned him to cover Bryant?

“Thanks again,” King said.

King added: “I don’t really got too much to say about that. I think that you guys can kind of tell just by my play and how we’ve been talking, that doesn’t really faze me too much.”

King said he expects a “real physical” matchup against Bryant. The Cowboys receiver caught nine passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in their NFC divisional playoff loss to the Packers in January, working over the since-released LaDarius Gunter.

King didn’t start Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, but he got more exposure covering Jones as the game progressed.

Green had 10 catches for 111 yards and one touchdown with King following him on most snaps.

It’s invaluable experience for a rookie corner, the type of matchups King will see if the Packers make the playoffs this season. King said he has enjoyed learning how to cover some of the game’s elite playmakers.

“Those are the kinds of things you figure out as the game goes on,” King said. “I haven’t faced them, but they haven’t faced me yet either.”

Suspension reduced: The NFL announced it has reduced Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan's suspension to one game for his hit on Packers receiver Davante Adams during their game Thursday night.

Trevathan initially was suspended for two games by the NFL because of the vicious nature of the hit, but that penalty was reduced Tuesday to one game on appeal.

Foot surgery: Packers offensive tackle Kyle Murphy will undergo surgery on his injured foot, according to a league source. The procedure is scheduled for next week.

Murphy had beaten out former second-round pick Jason Spriggs to be named the top backup at tackle entering the regular season. He started in Week 1 at right tackle while Bryan Bulaga recovered from an ankle injury, then started the next two games at left tackle as David Bakhtiari dealt with a hamstring problem.

Murphy played all 70 snaps against the Cincinnati Bengals and finished the game despite what turned out to be a significant foot injury. He was seen wearing a medical boot and using a knee scooter to move around the locker room last week.

By Tuesday of last week, the Packers had placed Murphy on injured reserve. The Pacers do not allow reporters to speak with players on IR.

Murphy is one of three linemen on IR, where he is joined by Spriggs (hamstring) and Don Barclay (ankle).
