Amtrak interiors through the years

USA TODAY

Amtrak recently announced an extensive overhaul of the interiors of its train fleet. The improvements will include new seat cushions, new carpeting, new LED reading lights, new bathroom flooring and redesigned galleys in the café cars. Amtrak will implement the $16 million project in phases on its Northeast Regional and Midwest trains, starting with new carpets and cushions and upgraded restrooms this fall. More than 450 cars will have been overhauled by summer of 2018. The new interiors will appear on Northeast Regional service, Vermonter, Downeaster, Empire Service, Maple Leaf, Adirondack, Ethan Allen Express, Keystone, Springfield Shuttles, Pennsylvanian and Carolinian. In the Midwest, customers will see upgrades on the Illinois Service, Hiawatha, Missouri River Runner and Michigan Services.

The rail operator also put together a historical slideshow showing the evolution of its "Amfleet" interiors from the 1970s to today. See the slideshow above for a trip down memory lane plus renderings of the next generation of passenger rail cars.
