MADISON – Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel announced Monday he is investigating the hacking of credit rating agency Equifax.

The Republican attorney general said in a news release that his Department of Justice had issued a subpoena asking Equifax to explain what happened and why it took so long to alert the public to what happened. The state is also seeking the names of Wisconsin residents affected by the breach and what is being done to help them.

In a letter last week, Schimel and other attorneys general asked Equifax to stop offering fee-based services in response to the security breach at a time when it is also providing free services in response to it.
