Michigan fruits and vegetables report

Hot weather advanced apple maturity and aided carrot and potato harvest in Michigan, but raised concerns about fruit finish.

The latest fruits and vegetables report from USDA says prevailing dry conditions allowed apple growers to keep up with harvest tasks fairly well last week.

However, those wanting to prepare apples for controlled atmosphere storage have been challenged by a lack of rainfall.

In grapes, Niagra and hybrid wine varieties continue to be harvested in the southwest.

In northwest Michigan, wine grapes are proceeding normally through the onset of ripening.
