A 59-year-old former city of Prescott police employee was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor repeatedly decades ago, according to Prescott Valley police.

A 33-year-old woman accused Neil Campbell of sexually assaulting her repeatedly between the ages of 5 and 13, police said.

In a Prescott Valley Police Department press release, police first got word of the alleged crimes on July 19, 2017, from a complaint that suspected a "pattern of on-going criminal sexual conduct with a minor."

During the eight-year period in which the crimes are believed to have occurred, the victim resided between Prescott Valley and Tucson, Prescott Valley police said in a press release.

Once Prescott Valley police received information about the allegations, detectives from the Tucson Police Department were also asked to join the investigation.

After both police departments established probable cause, Campbell was arrested on suspicion of sexual contact with a minor and child molestation, said Prescott Valley police, who did not specify when Campbell was arrested.

Campbell was booked into the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Detention Center in Camp Verde.

Prescott Valley police said the investigation is ongoing.

Campbell began his employment with the city of Prescott in 2003, working first as an animal-control officer and then as a parking-enforcement officer with the Police Department.

City of Prescott Deputy Police Chief Amy Bonney confirmed that Campbell was fired from his job with the city.
