Matthew Krueger was nominated to be U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin by President Donald Trump.

Matthew Krueger, an assistant U.S. attorney in Milwaukee, has been nominated by President Donald Trump for the job of top federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

U.S. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) announced the nomination Friday. It is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

“Mr. Krueger is an excellent choice to serve as the U.S. attorney for Wisconsin’s Eastern District," Johnson said in a news release. "He has extensive legal experience and will do an admirable job of ensuring justice is done in Wisconsin.”

Krueger was one of three finalists for the job, emerging from a list from Johnson and Democrat U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

The other finalists were John Franke, a former Milwaukee County judge and a former assistant U.S. attorney in Wisconsin, and Jonathan Koenig, chief of the appellate division in the U.S. attorney’s office in the eastern district of Wisconsin.

The eastern district covers 28 Wisconsin counties, including Milwaukee.

Krueger, 39, who grew up in Milwaukee and Brookfield, has been a prosecutor in the U.S. attorney’s office for the eastern district of Wisconsin since 2013.

He previously was an associate at Sidley Austin law firm in Washington, D.C. He also served as a Bristow Fellow in the Office of the Solicitor General of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Out of law school, he clerked for Judge Paul V. Niemeyer in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.

Krueger graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2006.

In a profile introducing new prosecutors in the Milwaukee office, Krueger said he enjoys hiking, running, Brewers baseball and touring playgrounds with his two daughters.
