Police say this car struck an adult and child at the bus stop near 44th Street and Thomas Road on Sept. 22, 2017. The pedestrians were critically injured, and the driver was hurt.

A woman and her toddler daughter were rushed to hospitals after being struck by a car that hopped a sidewalk Friday afternoon in Phoenix, police said.

They had been at a bus stop near 44th Street and Thomas Road when the car lost control and struck them, leaving both the mother and daughter critically injured, officials said. The mother's injuries are considered life-threatening, police said.

Officials identified the victims as a 41-year-old woman and her 2-year-old daughter.

"Right now, it's a grave situation," Capt. Justin Hoese with the Phoenix Fire Department said Friday.

Phoenix police said the driver, a 29-year-old man, had a learner's permit and was driving with a 20-year-old passenger with a driver's license as required by law. Officials said the driver was not impaired.

Police said late Friday it was not known why the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was able to get out of the car by himself but was still taken to a hospital for evaluation, Hoese said.

"We all have families of our own, and sons, daughters, nieces and nephews, and so when we see this, it's always tough on us," he said. "We got there quickly and transported these patients as quickly as possible so they have the best chance of outcome as possible."

Phoenix police say the intersection of 44th Street and Thomas Road will be closed for up to six hours for the crash investigation.

The warning to motorists to avoid the area was issued in a tweet at about 12:40 p.m.
