Vikings QB Sam Bradford to miss Buccaneers game due to knee injury

Sam Bradford won't play on Sunday.

For at least one more week, Case Keenum will start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings.

Head coach Mike Zimmer confirmed to reporters on Friday that he was ruling out starter Sam Bradford for the second week in a row because of a knee injury. Minnesota plays the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon.

ESPN reported that Bradford was seeking a second opinion on his injured knee from Dr. James Andrews, who has twice performed surgeries on Bradford to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, as well as once on a shoulder injury suffered in college.

Zimmer would not confirm that report on Friday.

Without Bradford in a 26-9 loss last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota’s offense struggled to finish drives. Keenum, whom the Vikings (1-1) signed this offseason to a one-year deal, completed 20 of 37 passing attempts for just 167 yards.

Bradford had been listed as a limited participant in practices on Wednesday and Thursday.

“I think it's one of those things that when I'm ready to go, it'll be pretty clear that there's nothing limiting me and I'm able to go out there and I'm able to play, and it's safe for me to go out there and do so,” Bradford said Wednesday.

Bradford said he suffered the knee injury in Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints as a result of a non-contact play.

“I felt it when it happened,” Bradford added. “I honestly didn't think it was that big of a deal, and then the longer the game went on, it started to feel just a little bit worse, and a little worse. I woke up Tuesday, and it just didn't feel very good.”

In the season opener, Bradford completed a remarkable 27 of 32 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns. The Vikings beat the Saints 29-19.
