The first day of fall felt like a hot summer day Friday as a new record high was set at Mitchell International Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Sullivan.

Two children catch up with their caregiver as they cross the street at North Ave. and 92nd St. in Wauwatosa on the first day of fall, Friday, Sept. 22.

At 2:16 p.m. the thermometer hit 95 degrees at the airport, eclipsing the previous record of 92 set in 1937, according to the weather service.

Sean Miller, a weather service meteorologist, said it could be even warmer inland Friday afternoon where breeze off of Lake Michigan won't be as evident.

He said the warm and humid spell would last through the weekend into early next week. Highs on Saturday will be somewhat lower than Friday, he said, but still mainly in the 80s. Lake breezes will kick in during the afternoons.

Milwaukee area fans headed for the Packer game Sunday afternoon won't find much different. It's going to be hot and humid.

"It'll be in the mid-80s and that will be the warmest time of the day," Miller said.

The warm spell will last through Tuesday when the a cold front moves in leading to highs in the 60s and low 70s, he said.

There's no rain expected beyond a slight chance Tuesday afternoon and evening.

"It'll be cold soon and it'll be cold for a long time, so enjoy it," Miller said.
