Breaking one school record is an impressive feat, but any player who has three —possibly even more by season’s end — is an extraordinary talent.

Mya Summers, a senior volleyball player for Morristown West, is that extraordinary talent. Over the past month, Summers has broken the school career records for aces and assists, adding to last year’s record 1,076 assists in a single season.

Summers’ 196th record-breaking ace came against Cocke County — a serve that left multiple defenders sprawled across the floor trying to slow it down. The ace broke Salem Stepps’ record that had stood since 2004.

Her new-record 2,028th assist that came a few weeks later again against Cocke County, was much simpler — a smooth set-up to teammate Blyre Shultz that helped propel the Trojans to a 3-0 win.

With these games being on the road, however, time wasn’t stopped for the senior to celebrate. But even she knew that she had “accomplished something big” by coach Heather Kelley’s reaction.

“She just kind of hinted that I had done something major,” Summers said. “I realized it a few plays later.”

Summers’ career stats are some of the best in the area, with 256 aces, 2,240 assists and 116 wins with five matches left this season.

Last week, Summers was presented with a ceremonial volleyball signed by her teammates and coaches. There weren’t any numbers on the ball just yet, though. Kelley is waiting until the end of the season to put on the finishing touches.

“At the end of the year, I’m going to get the ball and write down her final numbers,” Kelley said. “She’s been so extraordinary. These records sit in a league of their own.”

Summers plans on playing volleyball in college and is in the recruitment process.

But until then, she’s going to continue building on her records. Summers is closing in on all-time wins.

“It’s great,” Summers said. “I wasn’t expecting (the ceremonial ball), so it really caught me by surprise and made me feel good about myself that my team had helped me get to where I am and that I worked so hard to accomplish something.”
