Plans for eastern Kansas chicken plant up in the air

Artist’s rendering of proposed Tyson chicken complex near Tonganoxie, Kansas

Plans for a new Tyson Foods chicken processing plant in eastern Kansas may be in trouble after Leavenworth County commissioners backed off their support for the facility.

Commissioners voted 2 to 1 Monday to rescind a “resolution of intent” that pledged 500 million dollars in revenue bonds for the facility.  After the vote, a spokesman for Tyson said the company would have to reevaluate its plans for the plant.

The proposed Tyson plant sparked an uproar with many citizens expressing concern about its possible effects on the area’s air and water quality.
