COMMUNITY BRIEFS FOR SEPT. 20-27:

SEPT. 20: Members of the Ruidoso Cemetery Board will meet at 11:30 a.m., Sept. 20, at village hall, 313 Cree Meadows Drive. Items on the agenda include a revenue and sales update, entrance and right of way improvements and fall herbicide treatments.

SEPT. 21: Community Health Ministry education luncheon is set for noon to 1 p.m., Sept. 21, at Fellowship Hall, Community United Methodist Church, 220 Junction Road. The topic will be “Intentional Christian Grandparenting” by Ed and Jo Vinson. A light lunch will be served and the community is welcome.

SEPT. 21: A Peace and Forgiveness Meditation is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sept. 21, at the Buddha Yoga Studio in celebration of the International Day of Peace. The studio is at 200 Mechem Drive in Ruidoso.

SEPT. 21: Karen Rounds will lead the monthly financial planning meeting from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Sept. 21, in Room 115 at Eastern New Mexico University-Ruidoso. The session is sponsored by Creative Aging Inc.

SEPT. 21: A blood drive for United Blood Services next month is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 21, at Ruidoso Gateway Church of Christ.

SEPT. 22: Creative Aging Inc. presents Dave McVey, director of the Heritage Program for Seniors, and Ruidoso Police Chief Darren Hooker at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 22, as part of the regular monthly meeting in Room 108 at Eastern New Mexico University-Ruidoso under this month’s theme of understanding behavioral health.

SEPT. 23: The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs is opening a new exhibit, “German Internment at Fort Stanton,” at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, in the Community House, 104 Kit Carson Road, at the Fort Stanton Historic Site. The exhibit chronicles the fate of the crew of the German cruise liner SS Columbus before, during and after their internment at Fort Stanton during World War II. Helping facilitate the exhibit was the recent donation of a collection of images by German internee Reinhold Screiber. The event will include a series of guest speakers, the official opening and guided tours of the internment camp ruins.

SEPT 23-24: “Come and Fly with Us” at the Ruidoso Kite Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 24 at the White Mountain Recreation Complex off Hull Road. Contact the Ruidoso Parks and Recreation Office for more information at 575-257-5030. Food vendors will be on hand, along with demonstrations on building kites and flying them.

SEPT. 23: The local chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens will stage Fiesta Ruidoso from noon to 10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Ruidoso Convention Center. The council is marketing the Fiesta in Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Roswell, and Carlsbad anticipating increased tourism for September and making this an annual event to bring visitors from all over New Mexico.

SEPT. 24: Bill MacVeigh will speak about “Branded,” his first book, at 2 p.m., Sept. 24, at the Capitan Public Library. MacVeigh’s book was published in June. He taught history and science in Lincoln County schools for 28 years and grew up in Carrizozo hearing stories told by his mother and grandmother about the early days in the gold-mining town of White Oaks and Lincoln County, where characters like Billy the Kid roamed. Now retired, Bill and his wife, Dottie, live in Capitan. The library is at 101 E. 2nd Street, Capitan.

COMING UP:

SEPT. 30: The Run for the Mountain race staged by the Lincoln County Medical Center Foundation will help raise money to pay for graduating seniors scholarships and community causes. Registration is underway. The first annual 5K run will begin at 8 a.m., Sept. 30, at The Links Walking Path. The entry fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt and refreshments. Age divisions will compete. Late registration will be from 7:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. the day of the race.

OCT. 2: Alpine Village Sanitation District will meet at 4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 2, at a temporarily changed location in the district at 121 Alpine Meadows Trail. This regular first Monday of the month meeting is to conduct regular business for the district, such as paying bills and reporting on the operations of the water system. Additionally, there may be discussion regarding the upcoming election of a board member and committees to address the conservation and a drought contingency plan and capacity. All residents of the District are welcome to attend.  Agendas are available at least 24 hours prior to meeting time.

OCT. 7: The annual Aspen Fest Parade through midtown Ruidoso at 10 a.m., Oct. 7. Enter a float, band, horse or vehicle, or just come to watch.

Oct. 10: United Blood Services are looking for donors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 10, in the gymnasium at Ruidoso High School.

OCT. 15: A Toss No Mas Clean-Up is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 15, at Two Rivers Park beginning at the Lions Pavilion with noon registration. Trash bags, gloves, snacks and drinks will be provided, along with prizes and youth group fundraising opportunities. More than 6,000 pieces of trash are discarded on every mile of road in New Mexico, according to the promotional literature, which states, “When everyone thinks littering isn’t a big deal, it becomes one.”

OCT. 20: A Region 9 Art and Photo Contest is underway with a deadline of Oct. 20 to submit entries. Winners will be displayed throughout the Region 9 Office. The contest is open to staff, students and community members in Corona, Capitan, Carrizozo, Cloudcroft, Hondo, Mescalero, Ruidoso and Tularosa. Winners will be announced Nov. 2, at the Region 9 Education Cooperative open house/art gallery night. OCT. 31: School children will crowd the sidewalks of midtown from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 31, for Halloween Trick or Treat at local stores, followed by more fun at Wingfield Park.

NOV. 3: Holiday Hoedown Arts, Crafts and Gift Show is set for Nov. 4, at the Carrizozo Woman’s Club. Holiday gifts galore, local vendors, door prizes, music to enjoy and much more. Join members from noon to 6 p.m., Nov. 3 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 4 at the clubhouse at 908 11th St in Carrizozo. Enjoy soup and sandwiches for $3 all day on Friday and traditional holiday dinner for $8 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Saturday.
