Sean Spicer's Emmys Cameo Was an Abomination

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer got the last laugh during Sunday night’s Emmy broadcast when he made a surprise appearance, but not everyone is enjoying the joke.

Spicer appeared briefly during the monologue — to stunned faces in the audience — complete with a moving podium. “This will be the largest audience to witness and Emmys, period,” Spicer said. “Both in person and around the world.”

Emmys host Stephen Colbert followed up the joke, commenting, “Wow, that really soothes my fragile ego. I can understand why you’d want one of these guys around.” 

Sure, Spicer poked fun at himself. But the joke wasn’t about him. It was a joke about the lie he told during an impromptu press conference the day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration in which he railed against the press for accurately reporting that the crowd at the event was significantly smaller than for President Barack Obama’s inaguration.

While the celebrity crowd enjoyed Spicer being able to poke fun at himself in step one of PR rehab, his appearance did anger some people online, who noted that Spicer was celebrating his role as a liar to the American people.

Others were quick to point out a double standard. Notably, why was Spicer welcomed, while Hillary Clinton has been shunned as she went on her book tour?

On Monday morning, the reports were about how funny Spicer was, but it’s worth noting that he still has never admitted he lied to anyone.
