LOS ANGELES — Alamogordo’s Jarrod Burt can now say he is part of an Emmy Award winning show. His work as a producer and editor helped A&E’s “Born This Way” win two Emmys for Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program and Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program.

“Born This Way” also took home an Emmy last year for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. The documentary series highlights the outgoing personalities of seven young adults born with Down syndrome.

The Television Academy presented the 2017 Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies honoring outstanding artistic and technical achievement in television at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles this past weekend.

Burt said he was ecstatic for the show’s Emmy wins even though he did not take an individual statue home for his producing or editing work.

“The show won two Emmys this past weekend out of the four categories that it was nominated in,” said Burt. “The two categories it won in were cinematography and casting for a reality series which were not categories that I was nominated in – so I did not take home a statue but we are still super excited for our friends and team getting recognized.”

He said he still had an amazing time as it was his first time attending the ceremony as a nominee and not a bystander.

“It was a great night,” Burt said. “I hoped to win all our categories but two out of four is still pretty cool.”

Burt’s dates for the night was his wife Sarah, and parents Sen. Bill Burt and his wife Donnie.

Bill Burt said he and his wife were beaming for Jarrod and are proud of their son, regardless for being recognized by the Television Academy.

“They submitted three different episodes for editing and that split the vote, that’s unfortunately what happened. I am so proud of my son regardless because not that many folks from Alamogordo and even New Mexico get nominated for an Emmy,” said Bill Burt. “I’m very proud of him and his work.”

Bill Burt said the ceremony and after party were amazing and they even got to meet some celebrities.

“It was quite an event, about two and half hours of just one award right after another, some of which were edited to be shown on Sunday,” he said. “We went to the Governor’s Ball and that was quite an event as well, it was an incredible evening. Lisa Kudrow was there, LL Cool J, Bill Nye the Science Guy and there were several others and of course the cast and parents of ‘Born This Way’ were there and they all had nothing but good things to say about Jarrod and his work. We were very proud of him.”

Bill Burt said this is just the beginning for Jarrod and predicts he will have covet many awards in the future. He said the “Born This Way” team is just getting started and are already working towards next year’s Emmy Awards.

“They’re very aggressive, they want to go after this thing again next year,” he said. “We’ll see what happens next year.”

The 2017 Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies aired Saturday on FXX. The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards will air live today on CBS at 5 p.m. PDT. The ceremony will be hosted by Stephen Colbert.
