2017 ATB–Ellis Island bullion coins sell out at the Mint in three days

The Mint has announced that its supply of the America the Beautiful–Ellis Island 5-ounce silver bullion coins has been sold out. The Mint sells bullion coins, including the ATB 5-ounce coins, only to authorized purchasers (APs) and does not sell directly to the public. The bullion coins were made available on August 28, just three days before the supply sold out.

As of September 8, the bullion coins are still readily available from online retailers, including Mint News Blog sponsor APMEX.

The total authorized mintage limit for the two 5-ounce Ellis Island coins is 150,000 units. The Uncirculated numismatic strikes currently are limited to 25,000, while the bullion inventory was reported to be 40,000. Although more could be produced of either version, as long as the combined total doesn’t exceed 150,000, the Mint states that it has no plans to produce more bullion coins at this time. (Continued below.)

Meanwhile, the Uncirculated coins (product code 17AM) remain in plentiful supply on the Mint’s website. The Ellis Island three-coin set (17AG) will be available for purchase at noon on September 14.

The year’s cycle of America the Beautiful quarter products will conclude with those from George Rogers Clark National Historical Park (Indiana). Rolls and bags will launch on  November 13, 2017; the three-coin set (17AH) on November 27; and the 5-oz. silver Uncirculated coin (17AN) on December 5. Barring the introduction of an as-yet-unannounced 225th-anniversary item, the latter will be the Mint’s final numismatic product of the year.

Meet Ellis Island quarter designer Barbara Fox.

@data dave, Thanks for the link. I was able to take advantage of the offering.

It Lowered my Dollar Cost Average for 2017.

I really didn’t need anymore, but the price was Right…

I wonder if this will start the old mintage vs demand debate. IE Which 2017 bullion ATB will be worth more money, those with a lower mintage (Ozark, and Frederick @ 20K) or those with a higher mintage but appatrently greater demand (Ellis Island @ 40K). My money is on Ellis Island.

  6. cagcrisp says

@KCSO, My “insight” on the Ellis Island “P” puck is that it is puckering along.

In 2017 there are 13,000+ hard core P puckers on Launch Day.

In 2016 there were 14.000+ hard core P puckers on Launch Day.

Launch Day for Effigy was 13,467…

    …SO…That’s your Low Water Mark…

Anything Lower than Effigy would be a Disaster…

  7. Sith says

@KCSO – Thank you for your concern. The family that is left on the island is without lights as of this morning, and 1/2 of them are without water, but they dodged a bullet. It is a mess, but it is superficial. IE they will be on their feet in days\weeks rather than weeks\months. Thank you again for your concern!

I’m so glad I never got involved with the 5-oz. silver “quarters” or the First Spouse gold coins. Saved me a ton of money and loads of frustration. I’m almost ready to go back to the pre-1982 days (or better yet, the pre-1965 days).Life was simpler then. And cheaper.

  11. Qui Transtulit Sustinet says

    @ Louis Golino says,

Louis, I read and enjoyed your ATB story linked above, however, I see the current relative retail prices on the Douglass and Ozark coins differently.

IMO, the retail demand for Douglass before the “sell out” was announced was low (I bought it for $99.05 with a capsule during this period) leaving large numbers of them in the strong hands of the authorized dealers, who then raised retail prices considerably once the sell out was announced by the Mint.

On the other hand, I believe the Ozark coin was more popular and initially sold for a higher retail price (I paid $109.65 for it with a capsule) leaving less unsold inventory in the strong hands of the authorized dealers. and more in the hands of flippers willing to make less profit, which hindered the ability of authorized dealers to raise prices post sell out.

I’m looking forward to the birds and rocks of 2018, which I believe are some of the best designs for the larger silver puck canvas so far in the ATB series.

  12. Qui Transtulit Sustinet says

The early (pre-sell out announcement) demand for the Ozark also left more in the hands of collectors…who had no need to pay authorized dealers a higher price after the sellout.

I feel many collectors may have been undecided about, or waiting to buy the Douglass, then were faced with the sell out, and had to pay a high premium to an authorized dealer as they raised prices, or forego the purchase altogether.

  13. Mattarch says

Thanks to both of you for your insight on the Silver ATB Pucks. I have some and was wondering why the large price differences..

  14. Ross Johnson says

    Oh, say, can you see,
    near by Liberty’s light,
What a one armed boy holds,
    that he’s gallently waving,

Whose broad stripes and blank square,
    seem amiss at first sight,
O’er the coin our eyes strain,
but no stars are there gleaming,

    But the artists suggest,
    that less detail is best,
    Yet I wish and declare,
that our flag was still there!

Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave?
O’er the coin it’s not to be,
so this one I won’t save!

Louis – Enjoyed your puck article. I received my “MintDirect” tube from APMEX and my “P” pucks from the Mint yesterday.

I’m a hardcore pucker. I was hoping to end up with tubes of bullion coins from 2011 until the end of the series, a complete set of PCGS MS69DMPL and SP70, and 2 complete sets of “P” pucks in OGP. So far I have that plus extras. With the current state of the coin market I don’t think I’ll be able to continue buying pucks in the quantities until the end of the series.

Off topic- It looks like things are getting bad in Florida. I hope everyone is either out of there or has a sturdy place to go away from the water. I have family hunkered down in Melbourne. My nephew fortunately just moved back to KY from Naples.

  16. Tom P. - MA says

My Apmex bullion Island of Dreams puck arrived yesterday. No issues for me, although I don’t go over it with a magnifying glass as most on this board do. Not a slam, it’s just the way I am.

The P puck I ordered has also been shipped.

SUMMARY: The United States Mint is announcing the price of the 2017 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Silver Four-Medal Set. Each set will be priced at $199.95.

  18. KCSO says

Yeah Lou, though I’ll bet ya dollars to donuts it’s –

    UNLIMITED & UNLIMITED

That’s just the SOP going forward..,

  19. KCSO says

Given that the FR noticed was published for the Silver Liberty set though NOT for the LESPS.., I presume one can expect the same $149 price tag for the LESPS,

Can’t think of a reason why it would change anyway, or alter the current price gouging strategy.

  20. Louis Golino says

unless they include both proof ASE’s.

by the way, I believe I predicted $200 a while back for the medal set, and several people said it would be less.

  21. KCSO says

I called $209.95 for the set I believe, so buy up kids, the mint is giving you a deal……buy 10 sets get FREE SHIPPING! $50 a medal……$17+ spot…..! ?.does it come with a jar of mustard?

Harpers Ferry bullion puck 50,200 +200

IF you’re an AP, you don’t have a lot of choices if you want a bullion puck…

The mint must be having problems with Math also:

    105,000 + 75,000 + 50,200 +40,000 + 35,000 = 305,000

(And No they didn’t forget to add today’s 200. It was 304,800 before today when it was 50,000)…

  24. gatortreke says

Louis: been busy with family in Florida dealing with the hurricane so I’m just now reading your article about the 5 oz coins. I have to agree with Qui, his experience and mine are almost identical. I purchased a Douglass bullion puck for $99.15 on 5/1. I was away on vacation when the Ozarks became available and didn’t really pay attention to the release figuring it would be no problem obtaining one a little later. I returned to the sellout news and quickly purchased one but it cost me exactly the same as Qui, $109.65. I was grumpy I had to pay so much as compared to Douglas but I figured correctly the price would probably just increase from there.

One interesting note, while on vacation my family and I traveled through Rochester. We were following the Erie Canal from Lake Erie to Albany. We availed ourselves the opportunity to visit Douglass’ grave in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester. My wife and I thought it would be a good way to introduce our middle school age daughter to him. Also buried in the same cemetery is Susan B. Anthony so we visited her site as well. It is interesting that people leave little trinkets at her grave marker to honor her. I was mad because I had several Sacagawea dollars with me at the time but no SBA dollars to leave as a commemorative.

I have a complete set of the bullion 5 oz’ers and was originally collecting the vapor blasted coins as well but stopped at the end of 2015 with Saratoga. I will probably dispose of these as some point or perhaps sometime in the future I’ll decide to complete the set, the future remains uncertain.

From Provident, (which addresses some past discussion points) –
    ……………..

Thank you for your interest in and business with Provident Metals! We have some exciting news to announce! Provident has enjoyed nearly 8 years of continued success and improvement and we are excited to announce that we have been acquired by a group of private investors. They have signed a management agreement with one of the largest bullion wholesalers in the world, Dillon Gage, through 2022 to help improve inventory management as well as fulfillment operations.

This new development gives Provident the ability to offer a greater inventory selection and depth as well as maintain the service and creativity that you deserve.
We have always been the most creative online bullion dealer in the nation and have delivered consistent and industry-leading service and pricing. That will not change. What will change is our ability to deliver a greater depth and consistency of inventory as well as incredible new products. As a matter of fact, we are already bringing new and exciting changes to the market including a redesigned Prospector as well as the 3rd release of the Egyptian Gods Series, both of which will launch in the 4th quarter. We also have other supporting products in the pipeline!
Another new development is the addition of Bitcoin. It is back! Provident had allowed Bitcoin as a form of payment in the past and has brought it back as it has been a feature that has been highly requested by cryptocurrency enthusiasts. We continue to offer IRA-eligible gold and silver bullion and will bring more of it online in the coming months. We will be putting forth a significant effort to bulk up our IRA program to make it more accessible and easy for our customers to store their precious metals with the most secure and renowned custodians in the world. As a matter of information, our bank accounts have changed and so have our wire instructions. Please take special note of those new instructions if you place an order with Provident and request to pay with a wire.
As a final note, these new developments are the first of many that we have lined up for release in the coming months. We are excited that we have been able to maintain all the employees at Provident including the executive leadership that has brought so many improvements to the precious metals industry. We are honored to have a management contract in place with Dillon Gage because of their 40+ years of delivering consistent results and providing stability in an uncertain landscape. We are thrilled with our new partner investors because of their commitment to enter into the online retail world of bullion that we all know and love.

    With kindest regards,

    Joseph Merrick, President

No comments on this one? Not as bad as I expected. I’m sure the number will drop by about 1K in week 4 with returns, but it is on path to exceed Ozark. It does seem like the P pucks have moved from the low 17K range to the upper 15K range this year.

Overall the mint is going to see a 10 year fiscal low for sales and profits.

@data dave, “No comments on this one? Not as bad as I expected.” I Agree.

“Overall the mint is going to see a 10 year fiscal low for sales and profits.” The Mint will see 10 calendar year low for sales and profits on the bullion side.

Not to sure on the 10 year fiscal year side for numismatics sales and profits. The 2016 Walking Liberty Gold and the 2017 American Liberty Gold were both in FY17. Both created a lot of sales dollars.

Net Income for the numismatic side was $8.9 million for FY16. That’s pretty much a Low Water Mark for profitability…

Here is the wikipedia summary of the term ICO:
Initial coin offering (ICO) is an unregulated means of crowdfunding via use of cryptocurrency and is applied by cryptocurrency businesses as an alternative to the rigorous and regulated capital-raising process required by venture capitalists, banks, or stock exchanges.
