After check-in at the Delta counter at LAX, I decided to head over to the Alaska Airlines Boardroom in LAX. This would put me closer to the gate where Delta parks their 777 at LAX. It also gave me a chance to relax in the lounge before this early morning flight in Delta’s internationally configured Business Elite cabin onboard their wide body 777.

There have been a lot of comparisons between Delta’s new 757 Business Elite seats and other airline’s Transcon service. But what I think is missing is that Delta also operates their 767 and 777 with internationally configured Business Elite seats across country. Could Delta’s 777 Business Elite product quite possibly be the best seat you can snag on a domestic route within the US?

Heading to the gate I was still on the upgrade waitlist. As a Platinum Elite (who earned Delta Platinum status the easy way) I was confirmed into 1 of 2 available Business Elite seats prior to departure. I proceeded to board with my coach boarding pass and once scanned, the system automatically printed me a new boarding pass for what is arguably one of the best seats on the 777, 14 D.

Unlike my outbound flight on the 777, seat was located in the rear cabin of Business Elite.

The seat has a closet to next to the aisle, so it acts as a privacy screen.

In addition, the seat comes with added space. There is a small storage area next to the seat between the closet. This is a great place to store items you’d like at arms length during long flights.

The other seats in row 14 and row 7 also have the additional storage space. But the seats in the middle are noticeably less private.

Not long after getting settled in I was offered a pre-departure drink. For this early morning flight it was a cup of black coffee served in one of Delta’s stylish cups.

A quick look out the window and you knew the plane wasn’t parked in Delta territory. The 777 is parked over near United and Alaska airlines flights. So the closest club lounge will be the Alaska Airlines Boardroom which you can access with Sky Club access or through the Priority Pass Select account provided by the Platinum Card® from American Express. 

We took off towards the west and quickly banked back south and then east.

One of the downsides (#firstworldproblems) of the Delta 777 Business Elite seats is they all face the aisle. This means instead of a window view you’ll have a view straight at the feet of other passengers. This problem is only exaggerated in Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class on their A340. Delta seems to have corrected this “problem” on the new 747 Business Elite seats where the seats are all facing towards the windows.

I pulled out the In Flight Entertainment system and got comfortable before the mid-morning breakfast.

The breakfast turned out to be one of my favorite breakfast meals on a Delta flight, the First Class Omelette.

It was a slight variation from my previous ones, but it was tasty. I’ve found Delta’s food to be consistently edible and good. The only meal I didn’t care for was the cold fried chicken dish due to misplaced expectations (thought it would be hot) on the New York to Atlanta 767 flight in Business Elite.

Bottom Line

Delta is continuing to improve their official Transcon service with enhancements like the 757 flat bed seats. But don’t forget about Delta’s unofficial “Transcon” services like the internationally configured 777 or 767 with flat bed seats. In addition, these wide bodies are rumored to get in flight wifi in the very near future taking away the only down side to flying in one of these big planes.

So to answer the question ” Could Delta’s 777 Business Elite product quite possibly be the best seat you can snag on a domestic route within the US?” For me, I’d say yes it is the best seat I can upgrade to, except for the rare American Airlines 777 with International First Class roaming around the United States.
