Floyd Mayweather promises huge bet on himself to beat Conor McGregor

LAS VEGAS — Floyd Mayweather is planning a huge financial wager on himself to beat Conor McGregor in Saturday’s boxing bout between the pair.

Mayweather famously loves to bet on professional sports and said on Wednesday afternoon that he considers victory over UFC star McGregor to be such a formality that he will put his money where his mouth is.

"You guys will see the ticket, don’t worry," Mayweather said. "You guys will see the betting ticket. I can’t really say what’s the number, but I will bet something heavy. Will it be my biggest ever? Most likely."

The 40-year-old has previously gambled to the tune of millions of dollars on basketball and football games and, according to a tweet from Vegas betting insider R.J. Bell, is considering placing a $5 million stake on himself at odds of -400. That bet, if successful, would net him $1.25 million profit.

"I have said it is not going the distance and you can mark my word," Mayweather added. "I am going to go out there and do what I do best. I am going to go out there, fight, be smart, take my time and be victorious. It is totally different once you get inside that squared circle.

"It is going to be a cakewalk. I don’t worry about nothing. Ain’t nobody who can beat me. I am the best boxer that ever lived."

McGregor mocked Mayweather for his gambling boast and speculated that the boxer’s habit of posting winning casino tickets on social media was only part of the story.

"Maybe I’ll bet on myself, I don’t know," McGregor said. "I’m certainly going to win, I know that. I have seen (Mayweather) bet, he always shows what his wins are, not what his losses are. Maybe that’s why he is in this position and has to take this fight. I am focused on this fight, I am not gambling."

When the fight was first announced, Mayweather was priced at -2500 with oddsmakers, but a flurry of bets on McGregor has shortened the prices dramatically. The Irishman was as short as +300 at various casinos on Wednesday.
