Sailor injured on San Nicolas Island Monday airlifted to hospital

Staff reports

A sailor was airlifted from San Nicolas Island on Monday after he was injured in a recreational accident at about 7:10 p.m., Navy officials said.

A Ventura County Sheriff's Office helicopter flew the man, a petty officer 2nd class, back to the mainland around 9 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

He was taken to St. John's Regional Medical Center and released later that night, said Theresa Miller, public affairs officer for Naval Base Ventura County.

The island, situated more than 60 miles out to sea, is used by the U.S. Navy for training and weapons testing.
