For many millenials, the 1993 stop-motion fantasy musical film The Nightmare Before Christmas, by Tim Burton, is a formative masterpiece. To this day, the film holds a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Roger Ebert described the visuals in Nightmare to be “as revolutionary as Star Wars.”
Niue Island commissioned the New Zealand Mint to produce a legal-tender silver coin that captures Nightmare’s macabre charm. The coin is also officially licensed by Disney. Now, thanks to Niue, the King and Queen of Halloween have also made their numismatic debut.
The .999 fine, $2 coin contains 1 troy ounce of silver. The reverse displays the final scene of The Nightmare Before Christmas, in which Jack Skellington and Sally accept that they belong together. The scene is partially colored, and the Disney logo can be seen inscribed above TIM BURTON’S THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS in the lower-right quadrant of the coin.
The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as depicted by Ian Rank-Broadley. Reading clockwise from the top is the country of issue, NIUE, followed by the denomination of TWO DOLLARS. At the bottom is the year of issue, 2017, and in the nine o’clock position is ELIZABETH II.
