Raiders CB Sean Smith arrested, charged with felony assault on sister's boyfriend

Oakland Raiders cornerback Sean Smith was arrested Thursday on a felony assault charge for an alleged altercation that occurred on July 4, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and online jail records. 

The prosecutor alleges Smith “beat and then stomped” the head of his sister’s boyfriend in Pasadena, Calif., in an incident that "inflicted great bodily injury upon the victim." Smith also was charged with a felony count of battery with serious bodily injury.

Smith was taken into custody at 2 p.m. local time on Thursday and remained in a Pasadena jail Thursday night, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department online jail records. L.A. County jail records revealed that Smith was released later Thursday after posting $80,000 bail.

Smith faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison if convinced, per the District Attorney's Office. His first court date is scheduled for Sept. 29.

A message left with the Raiders was not immediately returned. 

Smith, 30, started 15 games for the Raiders in 2016 after signing a four-year, $38 million contract with the team last offseason. 

The Raiders play against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday.
