South Korea lifts import ban on US eggs

South Korea has lifted its import ban on US poultry and eggs.  According to the American Egg Board and the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) the South Korean market is once again open for US table eggs and processed egg products for eggs hatched on or after August 16.

Anne Alonzo with the American Egg Board and USAPEEC (you-sah-peak) president Jim Sumner say they are pleased with the advancement and US egg farmers are ready to again supply South Korean consumers with a reliable and nutritious supply of US eggs.

Earlier this month a temporary duty-free Tariff Rate Quota went into place for up to 28,000 metric tons of egg and egg products, which means they can now be imported duty-free through the end of 2017.

South Korea had been importing eggs from the US as the country battled its worst-ever avian flu outbreak that tightened its egg supplies.  However, the country banned imports of US eggs in March after a strain of H7 avian influenza was confirmed on a US chicken farm.
