The local chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens plans to stage Fiesta Ruidoso from noon to 10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Ruidoso Convention Center.

Ruidoso Mayor Tom Battin, seated, and Village Manager Debi Lee, at right, met with LULAC officials, including Juan Garcia, president of the District II Counsel, Ruidoso chapter president Julie Bustamante and Sylvia De Baca.

The council is marketing the Fiesta in Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Roswell, and Carlsbad anticipating increased tourism for September and making this an annual event to bring visitors from all over New Mexico, organizers said. Interested individuals or vendors for the family-oriented event can call 575-937-1463 or 575-258-1099 for information. LULAC supports diversity and is welcoming to people of all ethnicities, religions, sexual orientation, and economic status, they said.

LULAC, founded in 1929, is the oldest and most widely respected Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States of America, created at a time in the country’s history when Hispanics were denied basic civil and human rights, despite contributions to American society. The founders of LULAC created an organization that empowers its members to create and develop opportunities where they are needed most. The mission of LULAC is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States.

In spring of 2017, the Ruidoso LULAC Council # 8097 was formed with 14 members under the direction of President Julie Bustamante. The council is embracing the national priorities and has already presented to the Ruidoso community an immigration symposium along with immigration attorneys to guide how individuals can apply for legal citizenship, and has formed committees in the areas of education, health, marketing, and economic development.

Admission at the Fiesta Ruidoso will be $5 for adults with children under 12 admitted free. Pinatas and mariachi music will keep attendees entertained. Local and international hand crafted articles will be for sale. Folkloric dances will be performed.
