Inmate, 63, escapes from La Tuna prison satellite camp

A federal inmate was reported missing from La Tuna prison at about midnight Monday after walking away from the prison’s camp, officials said.

Charles Kelvin Smith, 63, was reported missing at about 12:40 a.m. from the La Tuna minimum security Federal Satellite Camp in Anthony, Texas, U.S. Department of Justice officials said.

“The U.S. Marshals Service and other law enforcement agencies were immediately notified and an internal investigation was initiated,” officials said in a news release.

Smith was convicted in the Middle District of Louisiana federal court on several charges, including transportation in interstate commerce of a stole aircraft, sale of stolen goods, transportation in interstate commerce of a stolen boat and wire fraud.

He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Smith has blond hair and blue eyes. He is 6 foot 1 inches tall and weighs about 175 pounds.
