Man who shot pair at HomeGoods distribution center parking lot guilty of murder

Aug. 29, 2018, update: Cristhian Garcia in June was found guilty of murder and other charges and sentenced to at least 60 years in prison, according to online court records.

Earlier story: A man is dead and a woman remains in critical condition after police say a man shot them and then abducted three young children late Tuesday night. 

Brownsburg police said Cristhian Garcia shot Alicia Canise Canizales, 22, and Jesus Huesca, 26, about 10:10 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the HomeGoods distribution center, 850 E. Northfield Drive, Brownsburg.

Garcia and Canizales have children together, Capt. Jennifer Barrett said. Officers suspected Garcia, 25, had taken the three children, all younger than 10, Barrett said.

The children were found safe and Garcia was arrested Wednesday morning shortly after Brownsburg police issued an Amber Alert saying the children may have been in extreme danger.

The children remained in police custody Wednesday afternoon, according to Sgt. April Hyde.

The victims were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital. Huesca died Wednesday; Canizales remains in critical condition, police said. 

Canizales and Huesca were heading to work at the distribution center when police say Garcia shot them. Garcia is a former employee for HomeGoods, Barrett said.

Barrett said security video shows a dark-colored car pull into the parking lot and a man exiting the passenger side to confront the victims, Barrett said.

The man pulled a handgun and shot Huesca and Canizales before he climbed back in the passenger seat and the car drove away.

Police do not know who was driving the vehicle, Barrett said. Police believe it is a green Volkswagen Jetta.

Witnesses told police they heard Canizales saying Garcia's name and saying "no" just before the gunshots, Barrett said.

HomeGoods employee records showed that Garcia and Canizales live together at a home in the 200 block of South Warman Avenue in Indianapolis, Barrett said.

Brownsburg and Indianapolis police surrounded that house for about four hours overnight before SWAT officers entered and found it empty.
