Village School student is ice cream maker for a day at Royal Scoop in Bonita Springs

Village School of Naples fifth-grader Katie Montgomery learns about making ice cream at Royal Scoop in Bonita Springs on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017. Montgomery won the opportunity to be an ice cream maker for a day through a donated prize from Royal Scoop.

Katie Montgomery, 10, spent the final day of her summer vacation the best way she knew how: making ice cream.

Katie spent Tuesday morning at Royal Scoop in Bonita Springs where she learned from the production and retail teams about how the business runs at the ice cream shop. She also created her own flavor — I Want S'More Ice Cream — a chocolate ice cream with marshmallow fluff, chocolate chips and graham cracker pieces mixed in.

Royal Scoop donated the opportunity to work at the store for a day to an auction at the Village School of Naples. Katie's family won.

"She was very excited," said Jodie Montgomery, Katie's mom. "We love Royal Scoop, and she loves ice cream in general."

Katie picked the type of ice cream she wanted to create before her role as a "scoopologist" for a day. Royal Scoop also sent her a blue staff T-shirt and tan Royal Scoop baseball cap. She even received her own Royal Scoop name tag.

Katie began her morning with the production department where she watched Royal Scoop managers Ryan Price and David Toadvine make Bonita Gator Tracks ice cream. Then it was Katie's turn.

Price took Katie step-by-step through the ice cream-making process to create I Want S'More Ice Cream. She began by mixing cream and chocolate powder and pasteurized egg yolk with a large blender to make the chocolate ice cream base. The chocolate mixture was poured into a machine that continued to blend it.

While the ice cream blended, Katie made her own Royal Scoop ice cream buckets and decorated them with I Want S'More Ice Cream labels.

Katie and the production staff also prepared the marshmallow fluff, graham cracker pieces and chocolate chips to be mixed into the chocolate ice cream. She seemed amazed throughout the process.

"Wow, that's a lot of chocolate chips," she said when she saw the large box of chocolate pieces for her ice cream.

When the machine finished spinning her chocolate ice cream, Katie and Price added the marshmallow fluff and a mixture of the graham cracker pieces and chocolate chips to the chocolate base.

Katie was all smiles as she taste-tested her s'more creation.

After she finished in production, Katie spent the second half of her morning with store manager Steve Cummings learning how to scoop ice cream and make milkshakes. She even got to taste-test some Royal Scoop ice cream flavors like cinnamon and espresso chip.

At the end of her shift, Katie passed out ice cream samples to friends from the Village School and her family, who stopped in at the shop.

Kristina Jay and her daughter Jasmine, 10, who goes to school with Katie, said they stopped in at Royal Scoop Tuesday morning just to see Katie in action. As Jay took cellphone photos of Katie, she was excited to hear about Katie's s'more-flavored ice cream.

"That seems so Katie. This is very cool," she said.

Katie said she loved the entire day at Royal Scoop and was especially excited to see her friends and family visit .

"I think all of it's been good," she said. "It's awesome."

Katie's I Want S'More Ice Cream flavor will be available at Royal Scoop in Bonita Springs starting Wednesday.

"It's a really good way to spend the last day of summer," her mom, Jodie Montgomery, said.
